How to Stop Safari from Unzipping Files

On Macs, Safari's default settings cause it to automatically unzip certain kinds of files after downloading them. This behavior is undesirable with large data files, especially those used with class. What's worse is that rezipping them creates archives that have a different, and Mac-specific, structure that can interfere with reading the files via scripts.

To avoid the problem, download the files with a different browser, such as Chrome or Firefox, or turn off the automatic unzipping by going to Safari's Settings... > General page and unchecking the box at the bottom:
