Overview

The purpose of First Year Forum is to get you off to a smooth and successful start at the university. It is loosely organized around Isabel Allende's memoir, My Invented Country, and her Milton Lecture in October, but it's really more a class in how to get the most out of your time at Syracuse.

Book and Readings

Isabel Allende, My Invented Country.

Assignments and Grading

You'll receive a letter grade for this class. Your grade will depend on two things: attendance and weekly assignments. If you come to class and make an honest effort on all of the assignments, you'll receive an A. Blowing things off, however, is highly discouraged. Here are the details:
Attendance
You must attend all class meetings and outside activities. If something comes up and you can't make it, call or send email as far as possible in advance. This is a very serious requirement: blowing off a session (not showing up without having a good reason) will reduce your grade by one letter each time it happens: A to B, B to C, and so on.
Assignments
There will be an assignment each week. Some will be reading assignments but others will involve writing or preparing a presentation for class. Each will be graded as follows: A for an honest attempt, C for a lame attempt, and F for no attempt at all.

Integrity

You are expected to uphold the highest standards of personal and academic honesty during your time at SU and this course is no exception. All assignments should be your own work unless collaboration is explicitly allowed.  All written work should cite sources appropriately and must be free of plagiarism.  If you ever have any questions about what's OK and what's not, please ask!
