Policy Studies Program > Requirements for the Major

Requirements Prior to the Fall 2021

Important Note

The rules vary depending on when you started at SU:

2022-23 or later: see the main Requirements for the Major page
2021-22 see Requirements from the 2021-22 Catalog
Prior 2021-22: see the rules below

Note: you may want to switch to the 2022-23 rules. You'd need to take PAI 305 but you'd only need 3 electives instead of 4 and would have much more flexibility in choosing them. If you want to change, ask your A&S advisor to switch you to the Policy Studies plan from the 2022-23 Course Catalog (the latest rules).

Core Courses

The core of the major is 6 courses for a total of 18 credits. The list differs from the current requirements in two respects: PST 305 is not a required core course and ECN 102 was allowed as an alternative to ECN 101. Here's the list:

  • PST 101: An Introduction to the Analysis of Public Policy
  • MAX 123: Critical Issues for the United States
  • MAX 201: Quantitative Methods for Social Sciences
  • ECN 101 or ECN 102: Introductory Microeconomics or Introductory Macroeconomics
  • PST 315: Methods of Public Policy Analysis & Presentation
  • PST 410: Practicum in Public Policy

Topical Specialization

In addition to the core courses, students entering SU prior to the fall of 2021 are required to take 4 courses in one of the topical specializations below:

  1. Environment
  2. Government and Business
  3. Health, Education, and Human Services
